In the Golden Film Era, major motion picture companies distributed their films to a network of studio-owned, first-run theaters (or movie palaces).  They required bookings of films, whereby theater owners were forced to rent a block of films (often cheaply-made B-pictures) in order for the studio to release to the theater the one prestige A-Level Picture they truly desired to exhibit.
